What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a custom cap that covers a damaged, weakened, or decayed tooth to restore its strength, shape, and appearance. Made to look natural and last for years, crowns protect cracked or broken teeth, cap a tooth after a root canal, or restore an implant. We offer traditional and, in some cases, same-day crowns.

Dental Crowns, Explained

A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a tooth, covering it completely above the gumline. It restores a tooth that's too damaged for a simple filling, bringing back its strength, shape, and natural appearance so you can bite and smile with confidence.

We use natural-looking, tooth-colored materials like porcelain and ceramic, and we shade each crown to blend with your smile. We'll recommend the material that's best for your tooth, your bite, and the look you want.

Crowns can be made the traditional way, over two visits with a custom crown crafted for you, or in some cases as a same-day, in-office crown. We'll let you know which option fits your situation.

Do You Need a Dental Crown?

A crown may be the right choice if you have:

  • A cracked, broken, or badly worn tooth
  • A cavity too large to fix with a filling
  • A tooth weakened by a large old filling
  • A tooth that has had a root canal and needs protecting
  • A misshapen or discolored tooth you'd like to restore
  • A dental implant that needs a restoration, or a tooth that anchors a bridge

Note: Not sure if you need a crown? We'll examine your tooth and recommend the most conservative option that will protect it well.

How Much Does a Dental Crown Cost in Chicago?

The cost of a crown depends on the material and the tooth being treated. Crowns are restorative care, and dental insurance often covers a portion. We're in-network with most major PPOs and will review your specific benefits with you before treatment.

To make treatment manageable, we offer financing through CareCredit and Cherry, and members of our in-house membership plan receive 15% off treatments like crowns. We'll always give you a clear estimate up front.

What to Consider Before a Crown

Crowns are a reliable, long-lasting restoration, but a few things are worth knowing. Reshaping the tooth to fit a crown is not reversible, you may feel some temporary sensitivity afterward, and like any restoration, a crown may eventually need replacing over the years.

A crown also isn't always necessary. For smaller damage, a filling or an inlay or onlay may protect the tooth more conservatively. If a tooth is missing, a bridge, implant restoration, or denture may be the better path, and if a tooth is too damaged to save, we'll talk through your options honestly. We'll always recommend the most conservative treatment that will protect your tooth well.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the material and the tooth being treated. Crowns are restorative care and are often partially covered by dental insurance. We're in-network with most major PPOs, offer financing and a 15% member discount, and we'll give you a clear estimate before we begin.

With good care, crowns commonly last 10 to 15 years or more. Their lifespan depends on the tooth, your bite, and habits like grinding, and we check your crowns at every visit so we can refresh one when needed.

For most people, no. We fully numb the tooth so you stay comfortable during treatment, and any mild sensitivity afterward usually settles within a few days.

A filling repairs small decay, an inlay or onlay restores moderate damage, and a crown covers and protects a tooth that's badly decayed, cracked, or weakened. A filling is best for small damage; a crown is best when more of the tooth needs protection. We'll recommend what suits your tooth.

In some cases, yes. We offer same-day crowns for certain situations, designed and placed in a single visit. Otherwise, a traditional crown takes two visits, with a temporary crown protecting your tooth in between.
