What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are thin protective coatings painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. They seal the deep grooves where food and bacteria collect, helping prevent cavities. Quick and completely painless, with no drilling, sealants are great for children and for cavity-prone adults, and they add an extra layer of protection alongside brushing.

What Dental Sealants Do

Your back teeth, the molars and premolars, have deep grooves and pits on their chewing surfaces. These spots are perfect hiding places for food and bacteria, and they can be very hard to clean with a toothbrush, which makes them a common place for cavities to form.

A dental sealant is a thin, protective coating we paint onto those chewing surfaces. It flows into the grooves and hardens into a smooth barrier that seals out food and bacteria. The whole process is quick, painless, and needs no drilling or numbing.

Sealants are most often used for children and teens as their permanent molars come in, but adults with healthy, cavity-free back teeth can benefit too. They work alongside good brushing, flossing, and fluoride, not in place of them.

Who Benefits from Dental Sealants?

Sealants are a smart, protective step for:

  • Children and teens as their permanent molars come in (often around ages 6 and 12)
  • Anyone with deep grooves or pits in their back teeth
  • Patients who are prone to cavities
  • Adults with healthy back teeth who want extra protection

Note: We'll check your teeth (or your child's) and let you know whether sealants would help. We only seal healthy, cavity-free teeth.

Why Back Teeth Need Extra Protection

The chewing surfaces of the back teeth are especially vulnerable because they:

Are difficult to clean thoroughly, even with good brushing

Are where many cavities first appear, particularly in children

Good to Know About Sealants

Sealants are safe, well-established, and one of the simplest ways to prevent cavities. A couple of things are worth understanding. A sealant protects the chewing surface of a tooth, not the spaces between teeth, so daily flossing still matters. Sealants also wear over time, so we check them at your regular visits and reapply them if needed.

Sealants are for healthy, cavity-free teeth, and they help prevent decay rather than treat it. If a tooth already has a cavity, it needs a filling instead, and we'll let you know if that's the case. Think of sealants as one helpful layer of protection alongside brushing, flossing, fluoride, and regular cleanings.
