What is a same-day crown?

A same-day crown is a custom crown designed, milled, and placed in a single visit, so there's no temporary crown and no second appointment. Using a digital scan and in-office milling, we restore your tooth with natural-looking, durable ceramic in about one visit, which is ideal for busy downtown schedules.

Same-Day Crowns, Explained

A crown is a custom cap that covers and protects a damaged or weakened tooth. A same-day crown does exactly what a traditional crown does, just faster. Instead of taking impressions, sending them to a lab, and fitting a temporary while you wait a couple of weeks, we create your permanent crown right here in one visit.

We take a quick digital scan of your tooth, design your crown on the computer, and mill it from a solid block of tooth-colored ceramic using our in-office milling technology. Then we bond it in place the same day. The result is a precise, natural-looking, durable crown, finished before you leave.

Same-day crowns suit many situations, though not every case. For certain complex or highly cosmetic front-tooth cases, a lab-crafted crown may be the better choice, and we'll always recommend what's right for your tooth.

Are Same-Day Crowns Right for You?

A same-day crown may be a great option if you:

  • Need a crown for a cracked, broken, or worn tooth
  • Have a large old filling that's failing
  • Have a tooth that has had a root canal and needs protecting
  • Have decay too large for a filling
  • Want it done in one visit, with no temporary and no return trip

Note: We'll examine your tooth and let you know whether a same-day crown is suitable or whether a lab-made crown would serve you better.

How Much Does a Same-Day Crown Cost in Chicago?

A same-day crown is typically priced like a traditional crown, and because crowns are restorative care, dental insurance often covers a portion. We're in-network with most major PPOs and will review your specific benefits with you before treatment.

To keep things manageable, we offer financing through CareCredit and Cherry, and members of our in-house membership plan receive 15% off treatments like crowns. We'll always give you a clear estimate up front.

What to Consider Before a Same-Day Crown

Same-day crowns are convenient and reliable, but a few things are worth knowing. As with any crown, reshaping the tooth is not reversible, you may feel some temporary sensitivity afterward, and a crown may eventually need replacing over the years. Same-day milling also isn't right for every case; some complex or highly cosmetic situations are better served by a lab-crafted crown, and we'll tell you honestly which applies to you.

A crown also isn't always necessary. For smaller damage, a filling or an inlay or onlay may protect the tooth more conservatively. We'll always recommend the most conservative treatment that will protect your tooth well, whether that's same-day, lab-made, or something else.
