What is a dental exam and cleaning?

A dental exam and cleaning is a routine visit that keeps your smile healthy. Your dentist checks your teeth, gums, and bite for early signs of trouble, and a hygienist removes the plaque and tartar your toothbrush can't reach. Most people benefit from a visit every six months.

Dental Exams & Cleanings, Explained

A routine visit has two parts. During the exam, we carefully check your teeth, gums, and bite, looking for cavities, gum disease, and other concerns while they're small and easy to treat. During the cleaning, we remove plaque and hardened tartar, then polish your teeth so your smile feels fresh and smooth.

These visits are the simplest, most effective way to protect your oral health. Seeing us regularly means fewer surprises, fewer big treatments, and a healthier smile for life.

We welcome the whole family, with patients ages three and up, so you can care for your smile and your kids' smiles in one friendly office in the Loop.

Who Needs Dental Exams & Cleanings?

Just about everyone. Regular exams and cleanings are recommended for:

  • Adults and children ages three and up
  • Anyone wanting to prevent cavities and gum disease
  • Patients who haven't seen a dentist in a while

  • Anyone who wants fresher breath and a brighter, healthier smile

Note: Most people do well with a visit every six months. After your exam, we'll recommend the right schedule for you.

Are Dental Exams & Cleanings Covered by Insurance?

Good news: routine exams and cleanings are preventive care, and most dental insurance plans cover them, often fully. We're in-network with most major PPOs and will check your benefits so you know what to expect before your visit.

No insurance? Our in-house membership plan (from $499 a year) includes your routine exams and cleanings, plus added perks, making it an easy, affordable way to stay on top of your oral health. We also offer financing through CareCredit and Cherry for any treatment beyond routine care.

Regular Cleaning vs. Deep Cleaning

A routine cleaning (sometimes called a prophylaxis) is for healthy mouths or mild buildup, and removes plaque and tartar above the gumline. If we find signs of gum disease, a routine cleaning may not be enough.

In that case, we may recommend scaling and root planing, a deeper cleaning below the gumline that treats gum disease at its source. We'll only ever recommend it if you truly need it, and we'll explain exactly why. Good home care between visits is just as important to keep your gums healthy.
