What is an intraoral camera?

An intraoral camera is a small, pen-sized camera that captures clear, magnified images inside your mouth and shows them on a screen in real time. At Dentistry at Millennium Park, it lets you see exactly what we see, helping us catch issues early and explain your care, comfortably and with no radiation, right here in Chicago's Loop.

How an Intraoral Camera Works

An intraoral camera is a small handheld camera, about the size of a pen, that we glide gently around your mouth to capture clear, magnified images of your teeth, gums, and soft tissues. The pictures appear on a screen right beside you, in real time.

It reaches and magnifies areas that are difficult to see during a regular visual exam, like the back of a molar or a hairline crack, so small problems are easier to spot. And because the images are right there on the screen, you get to see your mouth the way we do.

It's completely comfortable and uses no radiation — just a tiny camera and a light. Think of it as a window into your smile that helps us explain exactly what's going on and why any treatment we recommend makes sense.

Why We Use an Intraoral Camera

This simple tool makes a real difference in your care. We use it to:

  • Get a close-up, magnified view of hard-to-see areas
  • Catch small problems like cracks and early decay sooner
  • Show you exactly what we see, so you can make informed decisions
  • Document and monitor your oral health over time

Note: When you can see a cracked filling or a spot of early decay on the screen for yourself, your care stops being something that happens to you and becomes something you understand and choose.

How It Works With Your Other Care

An intraoral camera doesn't replace X-rays — it works alongside them. The camera gives a detailed, radiation-free look at the surfaces of your teeth and your soft tissues, while digital X-rays reveal what's happening beneath the surface and within the bone. Together, they give us a complete picture of your oral health.

It's also a wonderful tool for second opinions and peace of mind. Seeing a clear image for yourself takes the guesswork out of dental care and helps you feel confident in the path forward.
