What is scaling and root planing?

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning that treats gum disease. We remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline (scaling) and smooth the tooth roots (root planing) so your gums can heal and reattach. It's a gentle, non-surgical way to stop gum disease from getting worse.

How a Deep Cleaning Works

Scaling and root planing, often called a deep cleaning, is the most common non-surgical treatment for gum disease. When plaque and tartar build up below the gumline, they irritate the gums and create pockets where harmful bacteria thrive. A regular cleaning can't reach these areas, but a deep cleaning can.

During scaling, we carefully remove plaque and hardened tartar from below the gumline. During root planing, we smooth the surfaces of the tooth roots so your gums can heal and reattach more closely to your teeth. Together, they calm inflammation and help stop gum disease from progressing.

Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss, so treating it early really matters. We'll explain exactly what we find and recommend a clear, manageable plan to get your gums healthy again.

Do You Need a Deep Cleaning?

We may recommend scaling and root planing if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis)
  • Have bleeding, swollen, or receding gums
  • Have deep gum pockets found during your exam
  • Have noticeable tartar buildup below the gumline
  • Have persistent bad breath
  • Haven't had a professional cleaning in a long time

Note: We'll never recommend a deep cleaning unless you truly need it. A periodontal exam tells us exactly what's going on so we can suggest the right care.

Is Scaling & Root Planing Covered by Insurance?

Because scaling and root planing treats a diagnosed condition, dental insurance often covers a portion of it. We're in-network with most major PPOs and will review your specific benefits with you before treatment.

For ongoing gum health, our in-house Periodontal membership plan is designed to support regular periodontal maintenance, and members receive 15% off additional treatment. We also offer financing through CareCredit and Cherry, and we'll always give you a clear estimate up front.

What to Consider, and Why Ongoing Care Matters

A deep cleaning is comfortable, but your gums may feel a little tender for a few days afterward, and some temporary sensitivity is normal. Most importantly, gum disease is a chronic condition, so scaling and root planing is the start of managing it, not a one-time cure. To keep your gums healthy, you'll need regular periodontal maintenance cleanings (often every three to four months) and good care at home.

Scaling and root planing treats early to moderate gum disease. If your gum disease is more advanced, it may need surgical periodontal treatment, and in that case we'll refer you to a trusted specialist and help coordinate your care. In some cases we may also recommend an at-home gum therapy such as Perio Protect to support your results between visits.
